Keynote Speech 1: The Internet Above the Clouds

Abstract

Demands of “free flight” for air traffic and “Internet above the clouds” for inflight entertainment has inspired the conception of Aero- nautical Ad-hoc Networks (AANET), which are reminiscent of high-end Vehicular Ad-hoc Networking (VANET). However, given the typically on  order  of  magnitude higher aircraft speed, when compared to VANETs, AANETs tend to exhibit more dynamic topologies, larger and more variable geographical network size, stricter security requirements and more acrimonious propagation conditions. These characteristics lead to more grave challenges in scheduling, routing, channel modeling and antenna design, just to mention a few. These differences render many traditional VANET protocols inapplicable for AANETs, hence motivating the design of radically-improved AANET protocols in support of the unorthodox AANET scenarios and requirements. This keynote will characterize the associated scenarios, characteristics, requirements and challenges.  

Keynote Speech 2: Bridging The Social And Wireless Networking Divide

Abstract

The number of heterogeneous devices communicating with the aid of classic cellular networks is escalating, predominantly, because social media is generating an ever-increasing amount of global tele-traffic. The situation is particularly challenging in traffic hot-spots at public places, such as airports, railway stations, concerts, cultural and sporting events, etc. There have been revolutionary advances right across the entire field of wireless communications, but the most dramatic efficiency improvements were achieved by reducing the cell-size, especially in these traffic hotspots. Research is well under way for exploring the hitherto largely neglected high-frequency bands in order to conquer even the visible light frequency bands of the electro-magnetic spectrum. Against this backcloth, this presentation provides a whistle stop tour of the fledgling research area of mobile social networking, as detailed in.

Biography

Lajos Hanzo is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), FIEEE, FIET and a EURASIP Fellow.  He co-authored 18 IEEE Press - John Wiley books totalling in excess of 10000 pages on mobile radio communications, published about 1700+ research entries at IEEE Xplore, organised and chaired major IEEE conferences and has been awarded a number of distinctions. Lajos is also an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. During 2008 - 2012 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Press and also a Chaired Prof. at Tsinghua University, Beijing. Lajos has 30 000+ citations.
