Content-Based Instruction: What SIOP Model and Translanguaging Approach Offer to Multilingual Classrooms

 

Widely used among teacher training programs in the U.S, the Sheltered Instruction Observation protocol (SIOP) is an approach to make content material more comprehensible to English Language Learners in K12 bilingual and mainstream classrooms taught in English. In this presentation, I will draw on my teaching of SIOP model in U.S. teacher education program to illuminate important steps involved in implementing content-based instruction (CBI) in your classroom. I will also discuss the realization of translanguaging approach as it has received growing scholarly attention in the field of language education and often falls under the umbrella term of CBI. Sample of lesson plans and classroom excerpts will be shared in the presentation.
